Father Hopko to Speak on Homosexuality

Fr. Thomas Hopko, dean emeritus of St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary, will speak at the 2011 Synergy Symposium, on Orthodox Christianity and Homosexuality. His book on the same topic, Christian Faith and Same-Sex Attraction: Eastern Orthodox Reflections, was published by Conciliar Press in 2006.

Fr. Thomas will be our sole speaker this year. He will address different aspects of the theme in two sessions:

First session: Theological Vision: Orthodox Christian Faith and Human Sexuality
Second Session: Spiritual Practice: Orthodox Christian Faith and Homosexual Attraction and Behavior

Our young people need to hear Fr. Thomas' message on the Church's stance on this timely issue, particularly with the pressures they are under from their schools and society to accept that "it's just okay." Please bring your Sunday school classes, youth groups, etc. This presentation will be appropriate for those middle school and older.

Book Review: Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer

Staci, one of our Internet students, has given me permission to reprint her personal review of the book, Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer, authored by Norris Chumley and Fr. John McGuckin. Thank you, Staci!

Staci says:

I was excited to read this book for a few reasons. Having listened to several of Fr. John's podcasts on the Orthodox Christian Network, I knew an interesting and thoughtful man was involved in the project. Additionally, The Orthodox Observer newspaper had recently written an article about the book and the corresponding video documentary. And finally, the recent episode of 60 Minutes about Mt. Athos and my own reading of Mountain of Silence had kindled an interest in Orthodox monastics.

I really enjoyed this book and actually found that it ended too soon It is a combination of a travelogue, personal narrative, and spiritual journey. As the two authors travel, visiting monasteries, convents, caves, churches, and towns, I found myself gaining such an understanding of the area, the culture, and both the richness and remoteness of the areas and the people they encounter. The monks and nuns and others they meet are inspirational examples of people who have devoted their lives to Christ. Furthermore, the authors analyze the origins and the meaning of the Jesus Prayer and offer help to each of us to deepen our lives through praying this simple, but powerful and profound prayer.

The book contains many pictures, and has wonderful detail and explanation, so that as a reader of the book, I really felt that I was along for the journey with Mr. Chumley and Fr. John. The book did not disappoint me in my excitement to read it, and in fact was even more enjoyable than I might have imagined.

Breaking News: St Philip the Apostle's Tomb

St Philip shares the Gospel with the Ethiopian

This is exciting! From FOX News, July 27:

HIERAPOLIS, Turkey – A tomb believed to be that of St. Philip the Apostle was unearthed during excavations in the ancient Turkish city of Hierapolis.

Italian professor Francesco D'Andria said archeologists found the tomb of the biblical figure -- one of the 12 original disciples of Jesus -- while working on the ruins of a newly-unearthed church, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported Wednesday.

The structure of the tomb and the writings on the wall proved it belonged to St. Philip, he added.

The professor said the archaeologists worked for years to find the tomb and he expected it to become an important Christian pilgrimage destination.

St. Philip, recognized as one of Christianity's martyrs, is thought to have died in Hierapolis, in the southwest province of Denizli, in around 80AD. It is believed he was crucified upside down or beheaded.

Metropolitan KALLISTOS Ware will be speaking at North Park Theological Seminary on February 22 and 23 at 7 pm. North Park is located in Chicago, IL and the talks will take place in Anderson Chapel, 5159 N Spaulding Ave.

Kallistos Ware (born Timothy Ware on 11 September 1934) is an English bishop within the Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate and one of the best known contemporary Eastern Orthodox academic authors. From 1982 to his retirement in 2001 he held the position of Bishop of Diokleia. In 2007 he was made a metropolitan bishop. From 1966 to 2001, Ware was Spalding Lecturer of Eastern Orthodox Studies at the University of Oxford. He has authored numerous books and articles pertaining to the Orthodox Christian faith. Some of his most famous titles include The Orthodox Church and The Orthodox Way.

The catholic, or general, epistles of the "other apostles"-James, Peter, Jude and John-are sometimes overshadowed by the stirring theology of the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St. Paul. But these seven epistles are quiet gems of instruction, encouragement and exhortation for all believers. Written at various times and locations and to differing audiences, the general epistles nevertheless share some common themes: endurance under persecution, living out the Faith in a hostile society, discerning heresy by its fruits-namely, immorality and lack of love-and resisting it, holding fast to the apostolic faith. As Fr. Lawrence Farley deftly shows in this commentary, all these are timely themes from which believers today can richly profit.Working from a literal translation of the original Greek, this commentary examines the text section by section, explaining its meaning in everyday language. Today we celebrate the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles. The Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles was established by the Orthodox Church to indicate the equal honor of each of the Seventy. They were sent two by two by the Lord Jesus Christ to go before Him into the cities He would visit (Luke 10:1). The Church in particular venerates and praises the Seventy Apostles because they taught us to honor the Trinity One in Essence and Undivided.

Besides the celebration of the Synaxis of the Holy Disciples, the Church celebrates the memory of each of them during the course of the year:

With the Descent of the Holy Spirit the Seventy Apostles preached in various lands. Some accompanied the Twelve Apostles, like the holy Evangelists Mark and Luke, or St Paul’s companion Timothy, or Prochorus,the disciple of the holy Evangelist John the Theologian, and others. Many of them were thrown into prison for Christ, and many received the crown of martyrdom.

There are two more Apostles of the Seventy: St Cephas, to whom the Lord appeared after the Resurrection (1 Cor. 15:5-6), and Simeon, called Niger (Acts 13:1). They also were glorified by apostolic preaching.

The LOGISMOI blog has a wonderful homily on St Luke here. Writer Aaron Taylor wrote this especially for St Luke's feast day. The homily is a combination of facts and history about Luke, as well as commentary on two passages: 2 Timothy 4:5-14 and St Luke 10:1-7.

British Library posts Greek Manuscripts to the Web

This is wonderful! From Mystagogy, the blog of John Sanidopoulos:

One of the world's most important caches of Greek manuscripts is going online, part of a growing number of ancient documents to hit the Web in recent years.

The British Library said Monday that it was making more than a quarter of its 1,000 volume-strong collection of handwritten Greek texts available online free of charge, something curators there hope will be a boon to historians, biblical scholars and students of classical Greece alike.

Although the manuscripts — highlights of which include a famous collection of Aesopic fables discovered on Mount Athos in 1842 — have long been available to scholars who made the trip to the British Library's reading rooms, curator Scot McKendrick said their posting to the web was opening antiquity to the entire world. Among the illustrations in this volume there is an AP news photo from the Russian district of Bogorodsk, dated 1950, of a crowd of people carrying icons out of a church. This isn’t a religious procession; instead, they are handing the paintings up to a man standing in a farm cart. Though it is cold—you can tell from the bundling garments and fleece-lined caps—the crowd looks energetic and happy, and a pretty young woman at the center of the photo looks particularly joyous. In the foreground a boy is holding a small icon, perhaps of Christ. The cart is already overflowing with these paintings of saints and biblical figures on wooden plaques. The load is going to be hauled out of town and burned.

One of the books I read this summer was "The Road to Emmaus: Pilgrimage as a Way of Life" by Jim Forest. This was a game-changing book for me. Jim encourages us to see all of life as a journey to the Kingdom and to see every day as an opportunity to serve others and to grow into Christlikeness. In the book, he discusses our actions along the way (prayer, fasting, almsgiving), spiritual "places" like cathedrals and geographical locales, and different sorts of journeys when one doesn't travel (like his own pilgrimage of illness--I highly recommend this chapter for all those who deal with chronic illness). The book contains many photos that go along with the text. I found this an easy and enchanting read; it was hard to put down!

O Lord, You are calling us to do works that build up the church within us. Help us to discern works that are gold and silver rather than hay and straw. May the works we do be refined by the trials of life and not be burned up. We pray our faith will become stronger so we can receive salvation and a reward as good and faithful servants. The Hexameron is the title of nine homilies delivered by St. Basil on the cosmogony of the opening chapters of Genesis.... They are Lenten sermons, delivered at both the morning and evening services, and appear to have been listened to by working men. Some words in Homily 8 have confirmed the opinion that they were preached extempore, in accordance with what is believed to have been Basil's ordinary practice.... In earlier ages, it was the most celebrated and admired of Basil's works. ... Oldest illustrated Bible discovered in Ethiopia

The world's earliest illustrated Christian book has been saved by a British charity which located it at a remote Ethiopian monastery.

The incredible Garima Gospels are named after a monk who arrived in the African country in the fifth century and is said to have copied them out in just one day.

Beautifully illustrated, the colours are still vivid and thanks to the Ethiopian Heritage Fund have been conserved.

"Wonder," a new blog created by the OCA, is geared towards young, college aged adults, but is very readable by all. Every month comprises a theme that is addressed by several Orthodox writers and priests, giving their thoughts and spiritual teaching.

Gently and plainly written, these explorations on matters of faith and of the world are worthy of study and reflection. "Atheism" was explored in January and February. The current theme is "Capital Punishment."
